The origin of Marcahuasi

Several archaeologists have come to this plateau in the Andes Mountains to study the gigantic granite rocks. One of the first to explore Marcahuasi was Julio Cesar Tello.  He was followed by another Peruvian researcher, Dr. Daniel Ruzo de Los Heros, who, upon learning about the site, dedicated years to its study. He came to the conclusion that the sculptures there were similar to those of other sites he had explored in Mexico, Brazil, Romania, France, England and Egypt. Based on his findings, he named the culture “Masma”.

How to get to Marcahuasi without tours?

Marcahuasi is a volcanic plateau, located in the province of Huarochirí, 4 thousand meters above sea level and almost 2 and a half hours from Lima.  To get there you must do the following:

Travel by car

In the jiron Chota, located one block from the Bolognesi square (downtown Lima), you must take a bus that for 7 soles will take you to the central park of Chosica, once there go to the bus stop that for 15 soles, will take you to San Pedro de Casta (buses leave in two schedules from 7am to 9:30 am and from 1:30 to 3pm).  In this town you can have lunch or something to eat, and then start your route to Marcahuasi.

Entrance to Marcahuasi: the fee for Peruvians is 10 soles and 20 soles for foreigners.  Also, in San Pedro de Casta you can find menus from 9 and 10 soles.

Hike to Marcahuasi

According to several travelers, you can take a car that will take you to a certain stretch and then walk about 30 minutes to reach the plateau.

Others say that there are routes of up to five kilometers to reach Marcahuasi, depending on your physical condition and energy, you can choose the best way.

What should you bring to Marcahuasi?

There is no lodging in Marcahuasi, so you should bring your own supplies:

  • Tent or sleeping
  • Warm clothes for the night
  • Fresh clothes for the day

  • The Monument to Humanity, a huge granite mass that, when viewed from different angles, a human profile can be distinguished.
  • Dolmen, known as “the mushroom”.
  • The Amphitheater: it is surrounded by large rocks that protect against the wind and cold.  It is the perfect place for tourists to camp.
  • The Fortress, the highest place on the plateau. In this space there is a monolith that resembles a great stone altar.
  • The Alchemist, where the most detailed visitors can see the hidden profile of a man.

Tips to beat the soroche

If you are not used to high altitudes, your body may feel the discomfort of soroche or altitude sickness. The symptoms are headache, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, fainting, vertigo, palpitations and concentration problems.

You do not want your trip to be marred by this accumulation of discomforts. So that soroche does not affect you, we recommend the following:
