Huaraz, known as “The Peruvian Switzerland”, is located in the middle of two mountain ranges (the white and the black) in the Peruvian Andes. But you may be asking: What tourist places to see in Huaraz? How to get there? Where to stay in Huaraz?

While you are traveling to Peru you may need to keep communication or a translation app. That’s why you may need to use one of our prepaid sim cards for tourists to avoid high roaming costs. In order to make a nice trip here in PeruSIM we show more about where Huaraz is and the places you can visit there.

Huaraz is a city surrounded by mountains at 3052 meters above sea level and that makes it a favorite destination for thousands of travelers around the world.

Incredible landscapes, multiple trekking to lakes, mountains, snow-capped mountains and natural viewpoints are part of its main attraction, not to mention the Andean traditions and customs that its people maintain to this day. The kindness, warmth and simplicity of the people of Huaraz make it a magical place that you cannot miss.

How to get to Huaraz?

The most common way is to get by bus, there are many travel agencies that offer tickets online or even at the land terminals. Usually the cost varies depending on the quality and comfort of the bus. You can find buses from 40 soles per person (12 dollars approx.) to 100 soles per person (27 dollars approx.).

However, try to arrive at least half an hour before the departure time to print your ticket (if necessary), store your luggage and be able to solve any inconvenience that may arise before traveling.

The bus trip to Huaraz takes 8 hours. And here’s a tip: Take the bus at night. This way, you will rest on the way, save a night of lodging and get to take advantage of the whole next day in the city.

Where to stay in Huaraz?

There are many lodging options in Huaraz and for all budgets. I always recommend opting for hostels: they are cheap, comfortable and above all designed so that you can meet more travelers like you.

A hostel in Huaraz can cost from 20 soles (5 dollars approx.) a night in a shared room to 80 soles (22 dollars approx.) in private rooms. I suggest that when choosing you take into account the location of the hostel and the comments of previous travelers. I leave the choice in your hands.

If your idea is to get away with your partner or family and have more privacy on your trip, there are also small, medium and large hotels whose costs vary between 40 soles (11 dollars approx.) to 250 soles (67 dollars approx.) per night.

These hotels in Huaraz usually change their rates depending on the season. For example, if you decide to go during times of festivities such as “Semana Santa” or “Fiestas Patrias”, the prices will be much higher. In the same way AIRBNB and traditional lodgings work.

What tourist places to see in Huaraz?

Here we are! What to do in Huaraz? I will share with you four ways, which in my opinion, are the best for sightseeing in Huaraz.

Tour Huaraz on foot

Huaraz is a small city surrounded by natural landscapes and emblematic buildings.

For example, appreciate the imposing Church of the Lord of Solitude along with an incredible view of snow-capped mountains. While you are there, take advantage and buy some huaracinos ice cream or the famous raspadilla (a dessert made of shaved ice and sweet flavored syrups). Consider it a necessary pause to sweeten our lives.

Visit the Plaza de Armas in Huaraz, where you can take pictures with alpacas or llamas or find out about one tour or another.

Pass through the handicraft alley where you will find all kinds of Andean handicrafts, from clothing to small souvenirs. Prices are quite affordable and by buying, you are collaborating with the development of local handicrafts.

If you like history, stop by the Augusto Soriano Archaeological Museum located in front of the Plaza de Armas. There you will find information about the pre-Inca cultures that lived in the valley and all its history. You will also see archaeological remains that are still preserved in the museum.

Visit the Llanganuco Lagoon

Magical lagoon located inside the Huascaran National Park at 3700 masl at about 70 kilometers from the city of Huaraz. It takes two hours by bus or private car. It is definitely worth a visit.

Hike to Nevado Pastorruri

Do you like the snow, but don’t make much effort to see it? Pastorruri is your ideal option.

The tour bus leaves you 15 minutes away from the snow in a fairly easy hike. Just don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses.

Learn about the history of Chavin de Huantar

Visit the remains of one of the first pre-Inca civilizations: the Chavin culture. Walk among the stone constructions, ceremonial temples and sculptures more than 3000 years old.

Relax in the Monterrey Hot Springs

Relax in the hot springs of Monterrey located 7 kilometers from the city of Huaraz. You can go by cab or even walk on your own.

I recommend finding out if the hot springs are open before you go as they are usually open on specific days during the week. Finally, we know that you have to keep communication with your relatives and friends, that you need to be able to orient yourself in new cities, that you might need help with translation and that you might need to search for restaurants or hotels. That’s why with PeruSIM you can buy a SIM Card for Peru that includes the data plan of your need without having to worry about high roaming costs.
