During a trip to this country you can visit many of its wonders and also upload photos using one of our mobile phone plans for tourists to avoid high roaming costs, that’s why here in PeruSIM, we made this list of 9 must-see places to visit in Peru.

1. Machu Picchu

machu picchu

Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas and one of the seven wonders of the world, is the most essential place to visit in Peru. This ancient Inca citadel remained hidden for centuries among the mountains and thick vegetation, until it was discovered by the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Machu Picchu is located about 130 kilometers from Cusco, above 2500 meters of altitude between the peaks Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu, two magnificent viewpoints of the ruins, which you can climb, taking the corresponding ticket next to the ruins.

2. Cuzco

Cuzco, declared a World Heritage Site, is one of the most beautiful cities in America and our favorite in Peru. This ancient capital of the Inca Empire retains very few buildings of this era, although in some of the colonial buildings you can see Inca remains on its walls, such as the stone of twelve angles.

The Plaza de Armas is the epicenter of the city, which highlights its cathedral, a place chosen by many inhabitants to spend a few hours in the afternoon, enjoying the life of Cuzco.

A good option to know the great history that hides this city and discover the Inca ruins around, is to book this tour with a guide in Spanish.

3. Iquitos

One of the most important decisions, depending on the days available, is whether or not to include the Peruvian Amazon in the trip and go into the jungle from Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado.

Puerto Maldonado is more accessible and cheaper than Iquitos, although over time it has become a tourist attraction that can distort the true image of the immense and wild Amazon.

Iquitos can only be reached by boat or plane from Lima, so being more isolated will allow you to experience the most authentic Amazon, although as mentioned above, the price is more expensive.

In this area, the lodges are located in the middle of the Amazon jungle and all have a transfer service in small rafts from Iquitos, although you must take into account that the journey can take several hours.

4. Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, is located very close to the city of Puno at an altitude of 3,800 meters. This immense lake, where its calm blue waters merge with the sky, is one of the most essential places to see in Peru.

To tour the lake and visit the islands of Uros and Taquile from Puno you can take a boat from the port, from where a little more than 5 kilometers from the pier you will find the island of Iros, built with totora, an aquatic plant typical of the area.

The houses and most items are made of this plant, and you can even sail in a totora reed boat and although we generally found it a very touristy visit, we think it is worth knowing its history and if you have time, it is a visit that should be done in this area of the country.

5. Paracas National Reserve and the Ballestas Islands

paracas national reserve

A little less than 4 hours by bus from Lima is the Paracas National Reserve, located along the Peruvian coast and another of the best places to see in Peru. This national reserve forms a unique ecosystem in the world, combining a desert area with a great marine diversity due to the abundance of food in the form of plankton.

It is advisable to visit this protected natural area with a guide, especially not to miss places like the red beach, fossil sites, fauna and archaeological remains of the ancient Paracas Culture, explained by an expert, which will bring you much closer to the history of this area of the country.

Very close to Paracas is another of the places to visit in Peru, the Ballestas Islands, small rocky islands that on excursions are surrounded by small boats that leave from the pier of Paracas to see its large number of birds, the colony of Humboldt penguins and sea lions.

6. Arequipa

Arequipa, known as the white city and built above 2,000 meters of altitude, in the desert mountains of the Andes, is along with Cuzco, one of the most beautiful cities in Peru, where the white volcanic stone houses predominate, which together with the historic center were declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Other must-see places in Arequipa are the Plaza de Armas with its Cathedral, the Iglesia de la Compañía and its cloisters, the Casa del Moral and the viewpoint of Carmen Alto or Yanahuara, with magnificent views of the city and the Misti volcano.

A good option to learn about the history of the city is to book a guided tour in Spanish in which you will also climb to its spectacular viewpoints.

If you want to have internet in Peru a good option is to buy a Holafly SIM card, with which you will have internet from the moment you land, several Gb of data, keeping your WhatsApp number and support service in Spanish.

7. Huacachina Oasis

One of the most beautiful places to visit in Peru is this important place. Located about 5 kilometers from the city of Ica, is the photogenic Huacachina Oasis, another of the places that enter all the routes through the country and is on the list of must-see places in Peru.

This oasis located in the middle of the coastal desert, with emerald green waters and surrounded by palm trees, is one of the few remaining natural oasis in the Americas.

The Huacachina Oasis is located about 80 kilometers from Paracas and you can arrive from Lima by bus from the Cruz del Sur station to Ica and there take a cab to the oasis.

8. Nazca

One of the great archaeological mysteries of history is located in the arid desert of Nazca. Between 700 B.C. and 200 A.D., the Nazca culture developed in this area, in which its inhabitants created the Nazca Lines, removing the red stones and leaving the white sandstone underneath, thus forming enormous geoglyphs with human, animal or geometric figures, only visible from the air.

Many theories, from an enormous calendar to religious ceremonies or the visit of extraterrestrials, have been written about the reasons why these enormous figures were created, without reaching any definitive conclusion or any demonstrable theory today.

The only way to see the figures is to fly over the Nazca lines in a small plane from the small airport located next to it. The flight, due to the wind and the pilot’s maneuvers, is usually bumpy, so it is advisable not to have breakfast before, take something for the dizziness and go prepared with the bag that you will be given when you go up.

Another worthwhile visit in Nazca is the Chauchilla Cemetery, a pre-Inca necropolis, which is a perfect complement to the flight over the Nazca Lines.

9. Sacred Valley of Incas

Between Pisac and Ollantaytambo, on the banks of the Urubamba River, lies the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. Due to its climate and geography, this fertile valley was one of the main sources of food supply of the Inca empire where the archaeological ruins of several Inca settlements remain and where you can also visit several traditional villages of the colonial era.

Pisac with its handicraft market and the Inca archaeological remains located on a mountain is one of the most famous places in the Sacred Valley and that we advise you, you can not miss in Peru.

These are some of the most incredible places to visit in Peru. Obviously, there’s a lot more to see in this country.
